IACH Bursary News – How you can help..

The IACH has developed a Bursary Scheme primarily aimed at encouraging individuals to take part in either their first offshore voyage or to help those with sailing skills to progress their ambitions to venture further offshore. The focus will be on youth development linked to their understanding of protecting our marine environment.

The first IACH Bursary supported event was successfully completed in September 2022. Ten volunteer Adult Young Carers from Devon took on the challenge of sailing a 72 foot Round the World yacht from Portsmouth to Brixham. Being full time carers, they always find it difficult to meet groups of young people and none had sailed offshore before.  The Tall Ships Youth Trust kindly provided their yacht, Challenger 3, with skipper and two full time crew who helped develop their self confidence and new skills from sailing together whilst being challenged by activities including mast climbing and being hoisted to the end of the spinnaker pole!  Time was also found to manage the cooking and boat cleaning throughout.

At the end of the 5 day voyage they were welcomed by local IACH members, the Sailing Trust and their Devon Carers organisations.

At the Skippers debrief it was clear that the 10 carers had all gained much from their experience,  good friends, feeling less isolated and reinvigorated with confidence to continue their caring roles.

PLEASE NOTEThis Summer we are hoping to plan a repeat of our successful partnership with the Tall Ships Trust by offering another group of young people the opportunity to take this offshore challenge.
